Get To Know Your Future Favorite Wax Specialist

Updated: Feb 25, 2023

Hello! You probably saw that I had a blog section and wondered what kinda stuff I had in store.

Well let's start off with an introduction so you can get to know who I am, Q & A style.

Well, who are you and where are you from?

My name is Ashley McBroom and I am from South Central Los Angeles

How long have you been an esthetician?

I have been licensed in the the state since 2014

Why did you want to go into esthetics and did you always know you wanted to wax hoo-hahs for a living?

So long story (grab a coffee or tea), I didn't really think about going into esthetics. I was working a dead-end day job and going to school at the local community college at night. I kind of felt stuck and didn't see the "light at the end of the tunnel" on top of that, I knew I wasn't going to move up at the job. Additionally, my tattoos and piercings were always an "issue", so I figured I should go into something creative. At the time I was just getting into makeup via an old friend and I had an 'a-ha' moment. When looking at the Sephora's, MAC's, and other makeup counters, they had employees that had tattoos, piercings, and colorful hair. So with diligent research I figured I could learn this makeup thing. HOWEVER, there was one thing...California had some unclear rules about who could and could not legally do makeup. (FYI, makeup is unregulated outside the salon). So I felt it was in my best interest to get licensed. Unfortunately the makeup thing did not work out but I did get hired at a popular waxing chain where I got to build my clientele and my skills.

What school did you go to?

Marinello, but they are no longer around

Why did you decide to go solo?

Well the main reason was that working at a chain or someone else is not for me, unless the owner(s) are genuine and pay well. Most do not know that many of your service providers that work at major chains only make minimum wage with some sort of bonus/ commission. I saw the numbers I was making everyday and felt I could go off and make that on my own. It only took me 7 years to do it 😅

What do you have planned next for Hype Wax L.A.?

Just to keep growing! I don't want employees, so this will be a solo venture until my body can't do it anymore. But I am hoping to give back to my community somehow, add more cool services, and build build build. Maybe a storefront in the near future and products. But for right now, making connections and waxing Los Angeles.
